Brussels was our last port of call on our 9 day road trip from Bulgaria to the UK. We had only one day in Brussels, more like 8-10 hours. And we were going to make the most of it, as always.
Here is a bit of the things we did in Brussels and what you might not want to miss out on seeing.
Grand Place:
You will never be too far away from the impressive Grand Place. A square that is surrounded by beautiful buildings such as the Town Hall and Guild Halls, truly deserving of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square is a great place to people watch and also plan on which of the pretty lanes you want to wander off into next.
Every two years in August, the Grand Place is covered with a begonia filled ‘flower carpet’. We will definitely be coming back to see this in the future.
Belgian Waffles
We then quickly walked into one on the narrow lanes and of course we were delighted to see the numerous Belgian Chocolate shops and shops selling Belgian waffles. It surely isn’t difficult to guess what happened next.
Belgian Chocolate Shops
Belgium and chocolate are almost synonymous with each other and with the streets lined with pretty and super tempting Belgian chocolate shops, any cravings that one may have for chocolate can be met.
Chocolate truffles, paper cones filled with strawberries dipped in chocolate, waffles, chocolate in every mold imaginable, think of it and you would find it here.
If that was not enough, visit the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate. After all that chocolate, we surely needed something salty.
What is more warming than a cone of Belgian Frites or Fries with ketchup and mayonnaise on the side. We quickly polished them off feeling very smug.
Manneken Pis
I was utterly underwhelmed when I saw the small bronze statue of the little boy peeing in the form of a statue. Manneken Pis also has been known to be dressed in different clothes and there is a time table letting those who are interested when this happens. We got to see the boy in his birthday suit.
St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral (Cathedrale St-Michel et Ste-Gudule)
This massive Gothic styled Roman Catholic Cathedral has been named after the patron saint of Brussels and is the national church of Belgium.
Many a royal weddings and funerals have taken place right here.
We sat here taking in the peacefulness and beauty of the cathedral and the intermittent sunshine straining through the stained glass.
We roamed a little bit more to see the European Commission Headquarters and a few more ‘official’ buildings of interest. But very quickly, went back to the cobbled narrow lanes with so many places to choose for food and drink.
Well there it is, our very short time in Brussels, which we enjoyed very well, with all the pretty sights, hearty food and tantalizing desserts. We hope you have a good time as well.
