Sometimes the moments you have spent in a city just stays with you for a long time Salzburg is one of the most charming cities in Austria. It has a very small town feel to it and it almost feels like time has stopped here. It is known to the world for its beautiful architecture, old world feel, outstanding natural beauty which lent a perfect backdrop to the famous movie – the Sound of Music and of course the birthplace of the famous composer Mozart.
Old Town
There is quite a lot to do in Salzburg, but the by far the most interesting was the old historic city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage area. To get a birdseye view of Salzburg and the Salzach river with the many bridges over it, we walked a narrow but shaded road. When we got to our vantage point, we could really appreciate the beauty of what we saw.
Festung Hohensalzburg, the Salzburg Fortress looks down on upon city from high up the hill. Walking up the steep hills is well worth the spectacular views of the city. However, there was also an alternative tram route to the fortress.
We slowly started walking towards the city centre, which literally takes you back in time. On the way, we saw several souvenir shops, cosy cafes, patisseries and bakeries.
Linzergasse
We were now on the main high street called Linzergasse, which was lined with old shops, designer stores and countless restaurants and cafes. The street is very old and very interesting to watch here are the overheard ornamental shop store signs.
Mozarts Birthplace
We saw the birthplace of Mozart, now a museum, it gave us a sneak peek into Mozart’s early life, family and their musical connection. There was so much we learnt about this great musical stalwart.
Old Market Square
We continued to wander into the old town until we reached a wide open square. We sat here for a while taking in the sights of the city, horses trotting about with their carriages behind them, locals getting on with their daily lives and street artists performing.
Untersberg
We came across the Untersberg only by chance, as we had not researched too much about Salzburg before our road trip. It is definitely worth going up the lift to the top of the mountain to experience a little part of the German Alps. The lift takes you right to the top, the mountain is quite high so you are guaranteed vast views in all directions as you go up.
The Untersberg mountain belongs to both Germany and Austria. Standing tall at 1972m above sea level and is known as a spot with high mystical energy perfect for meditation
After we got back down, we walked out of the lift terminal and saw that there was a market fair going on. There was a typical tent set up with live music being played and delicious food being served. And of course beer. We tuck into schnitzels and beer, and slowly made our way back into the old town.
There is plenty more to see in and around Salzburg, apart from the main attractions that can be covered in a day. The city however is so pretty that you can end up spending time just walking on the streets, taking in the freshness of the alpine air without having to plan too much to see or do. So on a happy note, we ended our Salzburg trip, and headed on to Stutgart.
Just wow, never been to Salzburg! but your story is beautiful
